Social justice and access to higher education remain part of the national discourse in South Africa. The Development and Alumni Relations Division at Stellenbosch University takes great pleasure in inviting you to join Prof Thuli Madonsela, Law Trust Chair in Social Justice, and Nokwanda Siyengo, Programme Manager of our SciMathUS university preparation programme, as they table these all-important issues.
Dr Nic Spaull, senior researcher in economics at Stellenbosch University and research fellow at Research on Socio-Economic Policy (ReSEP), will facilitate this discussion.
Stellenbosch University is committed to diversity and multilingualism. And we really want our diverse student body to succeed because they all have the potential to do so. Make no mistake, our academic excellence is maintained through our diversity. For this reason, the work that SciMathUS does in creating access to higher education for school leavers from educationally disadvantaged environments by helping them to overcome educational barriers to their success, is central to our vision. Our work extends even further through advancing equal participation and improved performance in reading, mathematics and the natural sciences at school level.
The questions remain: What role should the university play in broadening access and ensuring success, advocacy and policy development? Why is it important to be involved in these activities and who are the stakeholders?
