Prof. Thuli Madonsela joins the International Council of Arbitration for Sport (ICAS)

Lausanne 22 November 2024 – The International Council of Arbitration for Sport (ICAS), the governing body of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), welcomes Prof. Thuli Madonsela to its membership. Advocate of the High Court of South Africa and Social Justice Research Chair, Professor at Stellenbosch University, Prof. Madonsela recently completed a seven-year term as Public Protector of South Africa. Named one of TIME100's most influential people in the world in 2014 and Forbes Africa Person of the Year 2016, Prof Thuli Madonsela is one of the drafters of South Africa's Constitution. Prof. Madonsela is a member of the African Academy of Sciences and the Scottish WS Society and was recently appointed to the UN Scientific Advisory Board. She also chairs the UN supported Cities Alliance and is a member of the International Anticorruption Conference Council. She teaches on Constitutional Law, Administrative Law, Social Justice and Ethical Governance. She is a mother of two and an avid supporter of charitable causes.

Prof. Madonsela was appointed to ICAS by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for the remainder of the 2023-2026 term to fill the vacancy left in its quota after the passing of Justice Yvonne Mokgoro. ICAS is a Swiss foundation created in 1994, composed of twenty-two members with a legal background and who are active in the judiciary, international arbitration and/or sports administration. As the governing body of the CAS, ICAS manages its administration and finances.

The CAS is an independent institution based in Lausanne which was created to resolve sports-related disputes through arbitration or mediation. The jurisdiction of CAS is recognized by all Olympic sports federations and many non-Olympic federations. The CAS registers around 900 cases each year.

Professor Thulisile “Thuli” Madonsela, an advocate of the High Court of South Africa, heads the Centre for Social Justice and is a law professor at the University of Stellenbosch, where she conducts and coordinates social justice research and teaches constitutional and administrative law.
